Sonoma girls stun, boys swept

Softball Lady Dragons rip Carrillo, baseball boys fall to Drake, San Marin|

Sure they’re young, and it’s still early in the season, but Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity softball girls are showing signs of midseason form while handling a busy nonleague schedule and turning in some energetic, well-played efforts.

After dropping a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to perennial power Casa Grande, then overwhelming Richmond 19-0, the Lady Dragons delivered an impressive performance in soundly defeating defending North Bay League champion Maria Carrillo 11-3 last Thursday at the high school field.

After the visiting Pumas quickly jumped in front with two first-inning runs, the Sonoma girls wasted no time in answering back with two runs for an early tie, and they touched the plate twice more in the bottom of the first.

When Carrillo tallied another run in the top of the second, senior pitching ace Hannah Herrick shut the scoring door and notch the win as the Sonoma County League Lady Dragons added a run in the fourth, and followed with a six-spot in the bottom of the sixth that erased any doubt of the outcome.

Leading Sonoma’s 10-hit attack were sophomore Hayden Pearce’s three-for-four, including a triple and four RBIs; senior Shauny McVeigh’s two-for-four with a double and four RBIs; and sophomore Maddie Lentini’s two-for-three with a double and two RBIs.

The Lady Dragons start a four-game road trip today and then will take a spring break.

After an upbeat start to the preseason, Sonoma’s varsity baseball boys have hit an early funk and dropped back-to-back decisions to Drake in San Anselmo and San Marin at home, respectively, that, with last Tuesday’s road edging by Alhambra, made it a three-loss nonleague week.

On Thursday in Marin, the Dragons could muster only three hits and were shut out 4-0 by Sir Francis Drake.

For Sonoma, junior Maclean Meyn went two-for-three, including a double, while senior Kyle Garcia added a single.

In Friday night’s battle between longtime nonleague foes, the Dragons found their offense and rapped out 10 hits, but ended up stranding 13 base-runners, while being handed a 5-3 loss by San Marin under the Arnold Field lights.

Pacing Sonoma were sophomores Shane O’Malley and Carson Snyder’s two singles and one run scored each; seniors Seth August and Kyle Dunevent’s two singles apiece; a single each by seniors Garcia and senior CJ Vitale; and Meyn’s run.

The Dragons host nonleague power Acalanes at 6:30 p.m. Friday night, March 20, at Arnold Field.
