Lady Dragons paid back by Petaluma

Sonoma girls host defending champ Analy in title hunt showdown Tuesday|

Riding an eight-game winning streak, which includes a 6-0 Sonoma County League first-place record, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball girls were derailed Tuesday night at longtime SCL rival Petaluma.

After a second-half surge soundly defeated Petaluma in their first league matchup on their home court, the Lady Dragons had the tables turned on them and suffered some serious payback.

Down by 10 points at the break, Sonoma’s offense went ice cold, mustering just three third-quarter points and then being outscored 13-8 in the fourth period, with no player scoring in double figures, while the defense struggled to contain the Trojan girls, who raced off to a 52-29 win.

“They simply beat us in all aspects,” said Sonoma head coach Sil Coccia. “Just one loss and not a devastating one. We need to respond to this defeat and refocus our effort toward winning against Analy on Tuesday.”

Pacing the Lady Dragons were junior Jenny Eggers eight points, eight rebounds and three steals; senior Alexa Hall and junior Bella Bollman’s six points each; senior Sierra Lilly’s three points; junior Renee O’Donnell’s two points and eight rebounds; sophomore Grace Cutting’s two points, four rebounds and four blocked shots; junior Sami Von Gober’s two points and three rebounds; and sophomore Kayla Field’s five rebounds and senior Shelby Camilleri’s three.

The SCL front-running Sonoma girls have a bye this Thursday, Jan. 29, before returning home to host defending champion Analy, which they also beat in their first meeting of the season, on Tuesday, Feb. 3, in Pfeiffer Gym.
