Lady Dragons pound Piner

Sonoma girls edge Maria Carrillo in MLK day clash|

Playing back-to-back road games to start the week, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball girls established their in-your-face pressure defense early, and along with a productive offense centered around high-scoring junior Jenny Eggers, added wins 14 and 15 to their overall record, which has just four losses.

On Monday, the Lady Dragons edged Maria Carrillo 43-40 in a Martin Luther King Day nonleague matchup in Rincon Valley, before traveling to Santa Rosa Tuesday night and routing Sonoma County League foe Piner 59-25 to stay unbeaten in the SCL and alone in first place.

At Maria Carrillo, the Sonoma girls jumped in front by two points ending the first quarter, which they turned into an 11-point advantage at halftime and after three quarters with a defensive-led 10-1 second quarter and an 8-8 third-period stalemate.

The Puma girls managed to put together a 25-17 fourth-quarter run against free-subbing Sonoma to add some late-game drama before falling short by three points.

Leading the Lady Dragons were Eggers’ game-high 18 points to go with nine rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots; sophomore Grace Cutting’s six points, four rebounds and two steals; junior Renee O’Donnell’s five points, five rebounds and one block; sophomore Kayla Field’s five points and junior Bella Bollman’s four; junior Sami Von Gober’s three points and a game-high 11 rebounds to go with two steals; and senior Shelby Camilleri’s two points and five rebounds.

In their SCL road game at Piner, the Sonoma girls erupted with 23-10 and 22-2 first- and second-quarter runs, respectively, to have the victory well in hand by halftime.

Sonoma was led past the Prospector girls by Eggers’ game-high 19 points – scored all in the first half – along with seven rebounds and two steals; Cutting’s 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals; O’Donnell’s eight points, 11 rebounds and two steals; Field’s eight points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists; senior Alexa Hall’s four points; junior Emma Stanfield’s three points, five rebounds and two assists; senior Sierra Lilly’s three points; Von Gober’s two points and a game-high 14 rebounds to go with three steals; Bollman’s two points and a game-high five assists to go with two steals and one block; Camilleri’s five rebounds and two steals; and junior Heidi Landeros’ two assists.

The Lady Dragons, who played at SCL foe Elsie Allen last night – results not available at presstime – continue a long SCL road trip with a crucial rematch showdown at Petaluma Tuesday night, Jan. 27, with Sonoma having won the first game between the two longtime rivals.
