Sonoma wrestlers eclipsed by El Mo

Dragons grapple in The Pound Saturday, hosting Wednesday|

Facing one of the Sonoma County League favorites on the road with an undermanned lineup had a perilous look and, unfortunately, an ill-fated ending for Sonoma Valley High School’s young varsity wrestling team.

In Wednesday night’s SCL dual-match in Forestville, the Dragons could muster only three on-the-mat triumphs with no pins, and two forfeit wins, while forfeiting five bouts – four on empty weight classes and one due to illness – and dropped a 50-21 decision to a strong El Molino squad.

It was Sonoma’s second straight SCL dual loss after posting a league-opening victory.

Individually for the Dragons, senior Jake Randuch defeated Mitchell 10-5 at 154 pounds; junior Dalton Elster shutout Vargas 5-0 in the heavyweight division; sophomore Noah Bartolome beat Wright 4-2 at 162; junior Austin Beltran and freshman Valentino Battaglini each won by way of forfeits at 197 and 222, respectively; senior Jack Biaggi lost 7-0 to Ohlin at 174; senior Jacob Little was handed a 15-0 technical-fall defeat by Garza at 184; junior David Price lost by way of a third-round pin by Grajala at 147; and junior Jake McDonald was pinned in the first round by Gemini.

In three junior varsity matches, Sonoma frosh Henry Darnell Sazuma and Andrew McGrath won with pins at 162 and 173 pounds, respectively, while sophomore Ryan Angeloni lost by way of a pin at 142.

The Dragon varsity wrestlers will compete in San Rafael’s The Pound tournament tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 24, before finally returning home to host defending SCL co-champion Analy at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28, in Golton Hall.
