Sonoma wrestles Windsor’s King of Mat

Dragons in Forestville Wednesday for SCL dual with tough El Mo|

In the first of two straight weekends of tourney action, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity wrestlers competed in Windsor’s annual King of the Mat Tournament on Saturday.

Actually, with some injuries and illness requiring healing time as a challenging Sonoma County League road dual match sits on the horizon, only four varsity Dragons wrestled in the event and the out-manned Sonoma quartet managed to earn a 31st finish out of 41 teams.

Pacing Sonoma were senior Jake Randuch’s 2-2 seventh-place record at 154 pounds; sophomore Noah Bartolome’s 3-2 ninth place at 162; junior Jake McDonald’s 1-2 at 147; and junior Austin Beltran’s 0-2 at 197 pounds.

In Windsor’s junior varsity Prince of the Mat Tourney on Friday, the Dragons were paced by senior Jacob Little’s 3-0 record and first-place finish at 162 pounds; freshman Valentino Battaglini’s 3-0 first place at 197; frosh Andrew McGrath’s 1-1 second at 182; McDonald’s 3-1 at 147; frosh Dominic Biaggi’s 1-2 at 134; sophomore Ryan Angeloni’s 0-2 at 134; and frosh Henry Darnell Sazuma’s 0-2 at 162.

Sonoma’s varsity wrestlers travel to Forestville for their third straight Sonoma County League road dual match at 6 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 21, when they battle one of the SCL title favorites, El Molino.

The Dragons will then compete in “The Pound,” San Rafael’s annual varsity tournament taking place Saturday, Jan. 24, before hosting co-defending champion Analy in their SCL home opener at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28, in Golton Hall.
