Dragon boys trimmed in Terra Linda

Sonoma faces challenging tourney host Marin Catholic tonight|

Continuing their tough preseason schedule, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball boys traveled to Marin for a Tuesday evening nonleague clash with Terra Linda and used their defense to counteract their slow-starting offense and were able to trail by only a 21-19 margin at the half.

Unfortunately, the Dragons let down their defensive guard in the third quarter and, after being rocked by Terra Linda’s 20-9 run, they posted a 19-point fourth quarter, but still came up short dropping a 57-47 decision.

Pacing Sonoma were senior Ryan Wilbanks’ 21 points, senior Cyle Caselli’s 15, senior Alex Gustafson’s seven, and senior Ryan Fisher and junior Edwin Reyes’ two each.

Rounding out Sonoma’s varsity boys’ roster – directed by head coach Dennis Housman and assistant coaches Drue Jacobs and John Ratshin – are senior Tristan Mertens; juniors Nicolas Diaz-DeTorres, Spencer McNairy, Joe Peterson, Miles Pimentel, Daniel Van Kirk and Max Yankovich.

Tonight, the Dragons begin play in the annual 16-team Marin Catholic Holiday Tournament, which runs through Tuesday, Dec. 30, and their 8 p.m. opening-round opponent is the tough host team, Marin Catholic.

This evening’s winner plays the Arcata versus Irvington victor at 8 p.m. tomorrow evening, Saturday, Dec. 27, with the losers of both games facing each other at 4 p.m. Saturday.
