Cagers, grapplers prepare for holidays

Hoops boys host tonight, girls Saturday|

With a one-week break coming their way early in the 2014-15 season, the Sonoma Valley High School boys and girls’ basketball teams and wrestling squad used the rare no-action time to continue honing their skills for some home-cooking and hitting the road to compete in holiday tournaments.

Sonoma’s varsity hoops boys will host Albany tonight in Pfeiffer Gym – the freshmen start at 6 and the varsity takes the court at 7:30 p.m. – before playing at Terra Linda on Tuesday, Dec. 23.

Next they’ll be battling in the annual Marin Catholic Holiday Tournament from Friday, Dec. 26, through Tuesday, Dec. 30.

The Lady Dragon varsity cagers are hosting Justin-Siena tomorrow evening, Saturday, Dec. 20 – the freshmen begin at 4:30, the junior varsity play at 6, and the varsity tips off at 7:30 p.m. – and Novato on Tuesday, Dec. 23, before traveling to Arizona for the annual holiday Cactus Jam Dec. 26 to 30.

Sonoma’s varsity wrestlers are competing in the annual Healdsburg Duals starting at 9 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 20 – the Healdsburg Junior Varsity Duals are today – and the Dragons won’t return to the mats until they host the inaugural Deets Winslow Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, in Pfeiffer Gym.

Formerly the Valley of the Moon Wrestling Classic, the event’s name was changed as a tribute to Deets Winslow, the Dragons’ most successful wrestling coach, who was killed in a late-summer boating accident.
