If there were any thoughts of how Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity baseball boys’ scheduled starting pitcher Mitch Hood would handle a 24-hour delay when Friday night’s Sonoma County League clash was rained out and played Saturday evening at Arnold Field, they were put to rest in convincing fashion.

With near complete command of the strike zone, and bordering on mound perfection, Hood turned in a complete game gem by firing a one-hit, four strikeout, one walk shutout as the Dragons jumped out to a quick lead and built it into a 7-0 SCL victory over Piner.

Holding a comfortable, but not insurmountable, 4-0 advantage after four innings, Sonoma sealed the deal with a three-run bottom of the sixth that took away any hope of the visiting Prospectors rallying to make a last inning claim on the game.

Sonoma’s second league win to go with two losses was led by senior Dan Deely and junior CJ Vitale’s two-for-four with an RBI each; senior leadoff hitter Vinny Albano’s double, RBI and two runs scored; Hood’s single and run; senior Andrew DeMartini’s single; junior Kyle Dunevent’s RBI; and a run apiece by seniors Ronnie Cotter and Jimmy Flatt, and recent freshman call-up Carson Snyder.

The Dragons hit the SCL road for tonight’s battle at Healdsburg before returning home to host league foe El Molino on Friday, April 11.
