Sonoma water polo squads sunk

In a pair of physical, hard-played Marin County Athletic League matches Tuesday evening at the Sonoma Aquatic Center pool, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity water polo boys and girls came out battling and kept up early with the tough San Rafael teams.

But the young Sonoma squads couldn’t contain the visiting Bulldogs on defense, and were unable to generate enough offense to keep the matches close and eventually ended up with one-sided losses.

The Dragon boys managed to tally eight goals in their MCAL match, but were doubled in scoring by San Rafael, which posted a 16-8 win.

Pacing Sonoma were junior Max Shepard’s two goals, with one goal scored each by senior Adam Curry, juniors Joey Dukes, Jack Lewis and Jacob Paine, sophomore Owen Summers, and freshman Dominic Tommasi.

The Lady Dragons dropped an 18-1 decision to San Rafael, with senior Amanda Ramponi scoring their lone goal.

Sonoma’s water polo squads, who traveled to Larkspur yesterday for a league match with Redwood – results not available at presstime – will host MCAL foe Marin Catholic in their home finale starting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21, in the SAC pool.

The Dragons then wrap up their season with MCAL matches against Justin-Siena on Thursday, Oct. 23, in the Napa Valley College pool.
