To say it was a long time coming would be an understatement considering it took six years to win a league match, but the Sonoma Valley High School varsity water polo boys were finally victorious Tuesday in Terra Linda.
The Dragons turned in their best all-around effort of the season to break the long league losing streak by upending Marin County Athletic League foe Terra Linda 10-7 behind sophomore Owen Summers’ hat-trick plus one goal.
With sophomore goalie Cameron Baker coming up with nine big blocks, Sonoma was also led by Summers’ four goals; junior Cian Lacy's two goals and one assist; senior Adam Curry’s one goal, four assists and three blocks; senior Rick Taggesell’s one goal and one assist; junior Jack Lewis and freshman Dominic Tommasi’s one goal each; and juniors Jacob Paine and Max Shepard’s two assists apiece.
Unfortunately for the varsity water polo Lady Dragons, they dropped a 13-2 MCAL decision to Terra Linda, paced by senior Amanda Ramponi and junior Natalie Baker’s one goal each, and senior goalie Ella Mighell’s 11 blocks.
The Sonoma water-polo squads, directed by head coach Flynn O’Brien, who’s assisted by Lisa Ran and Owen Hardisty, played visiting Novato yesterday – results not available at presstime – and will host San Rafael in an MCAL match on Tuesday, Oct. 14, starting at 5 p.m. in the Sonoma Aquatic Center pool.
