Sonoma veterans cemetery expansion nears finish

The Sonoma Veterans Memorial Park expansion project is expected to be completed in mid-October.

The expansion extends the veterans memorial design with 32 additional full plots and 64 in-ground niches.

Upon completion, the City of Sonoma will begin taking reservations by appointment, at the City Hall Cemetery Department.

The cemetery market rates were analyzed last in 2010 and the City Council established all cemetery charges at that time.

Charges will not increase at this time for Mountain Cemetery or Valley Cemetery, but will rise for the veterans cemetery to cover the cost of the capital expansion project.

On Sept. 16, the council approved an increase for full graves to $6,443 that includes the plot, endowment care, administration and marker.

The charge for a cremation grave is $2,908. The open and close charges are paid at the time of burial.
