Sonoma Valley Library to exhibit marine sanctuary photos

The Sonoma Valley Regional Library will be hosting an exhibit of photographs from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration featuring the Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary from Wednesday, Nov. 5, through Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015.

A presentation by NOAA Education and Outreach Coordinator Jennifer Stock will kick off the exhibit at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, in the Library Forum Room.

Stock will discuss this magical ocean oasis and show underwater video footage of this hidden mysterious environment.

The exhibition features the very best images of species that exude the dynamics and beauty of the sanctuary. The photos of invertebrates, fishes, seabirds, marine mammals, and reef were taken by researchers doing studies at the Cordell Bank.

The Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary, located off the shores of Marin and Sonoma counties, was established in 1999 to preserve the extraordinary marine ecosystem surrounding the Cordell Bank. Due to its remote location six miles off shore, few people know about it.

The bank sits at the edge of the continental shelf and rises abruptly from the soft sediments of the shelf to within 115 feet of the ocean surface. Ocean conditions and seafloor contour combine to create an incredible biodiversity both above and below the surface.

This exhibit is free and open to the public.

The library is located at 755 W. Napa St., and is open Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
