Sonoma Valley Library hosts literacy training

The Sonoma Valley Regional Library, and the Adult Literacy Program of the Sonoma County Library, are looking for volunteers to teach adults to read and write English.

There will be two sessions to introduce and train volunteers to become tutors. An orientation session will be held Wednesday, July 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The tutor training session will be on Saturday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Adult Literacy Program helps hundreds of adults learn to read and write in English in Sonoma County. It is free for students in the program and there is currently a waiting list for students to be paired up with teachers.

Tutor Tim Matthews said, “Being a teacher in this program is incredibly rewarding and is a wonderful way to contribute not only to a person’s life, but to the community as well.”

The Adult Literacy program staff provides continual support as well as teaching materials. “The staff at the Adult Literacy office is always there to assist and to help us in any way they can,” said Matthews.

These sessions are free and no registration is required for the orientation session on July 9. The library is located at 755 W. Napa St.
