Sonoma Valley High gears up for homecoming week

This is homecoming week at Sonoma Valley High School. Students have a variety of activities set leading up to Friday night’s game against Piner and Saturday’s homecoming dance.

During the week, Tuesday has been designated “Blast from the Past,” Wednesday is “Wacky Tacky,” Thursday is “Noma Pride, Rally and Float Fest.” At Thursday’s Float Fest, from 6 to 9 p.m. behind the Pavilion, there will be a barbecue and music and students will be putting the finishing touches on their floats.

Friday, the homecoming parade leaves school at 1 p.m. marching up Broadway and ending at the Plaza. The JV game is at 5 p.m. while the varsity game is at 7:30 p.m. at Arnold Field.

And the week ends with Saturday’s homecoming dance, from 7 to 10:30 p.m. in Pfeiffer Gym.

Homecoming candidates were named last week and they are Mackenzie Albrecht, Alejandra Alvarez, Alex Gustafson, Colin Harris, Hannah Herrick Jacob Little, Shelly Marmaduke, Rodrigo Rico, Delaney Swanson and Rick Taggesell.

Albrecht is the daughter of Dennis and Lynne Albrecht. She is a four-year varsity athlete, participating in volleyball, basketball, and track. Her two older brothers, Braiden and Ian, influence her competitive drive and are two of her main supporters. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends and plans to attend and play volleyball for UC Berkeley next fall.

Alvarez is the school’s Activity Director and has been in leadership since middle school. She has played soccer for 11 years and is currently on the varsity team. She loves spending time with all her family. She loves animals and hopes to one day work in the medical field.

Gustafson is the student body treasurer and a three-year leadership student. He is a captain of the football team and a member of the basketball team. He loves his parents, Dan and Leslie, and his little brother, Max. He enjoys watching football and cheering on the girls volleyball and soccer teams. He plans to major in business at a four- year college next year and wants to enter the wine industry as a career.

Harris was born in South San Francisco. After multiple residences, he eventually moved to Sonoma in the second semester of freshman year. He lives with his little sister, baby brother, two dogs, stepmom, and dad. His hobbies include skateboarding, filming, collecting records, and hanging with friends.

Herrick is a third-generation homecoming candidate with her mother, grandmother, and great-aunt being homecoming queens for the SVHS classes of ’62, ’63, and ’84. She is a three-year varsity volleyball and softball athlete, who volunteers her time giving pitching lessons and coaching a Special Olympics softball team. She plans to attend Montana State University where she can fish, hunt, and enjoy the outdoors.

Little is the oldest in a family of four. His parents are Bryan and Susan Little and he is the brother of John, Samuel and Naomi. He enjoys challenging himself during school, taking 10 AP classes over the course of high school, and is the editor of the school newspaper, The Dragon’s Tale. He has also played on the school’s varsity football and baseball teams.

Marmaduke is an athletic student, with her two favorite sports being soccer and volleyball. In her free time, she likes to run, paint, and shop. She is very loud, outgoing, and always laughing. When she is having a bad day, the first thing she looks forward to going to soccer and spending time with her team.

Rico is native of El Salvador, where he lived for 13 years. He moved to Sonoma four years ago. He has been a part of Leadership since he entered high school. Also, he is a member of the track team and volunteers at organizations such as Ceres Project.

Swanson is the daughter of Wendy and Dan Swanson, and has two older brothers who are Nathaniel and Christopher. She is a four-year varsity volleyball player and a two- (hopefully three-year) varsity basketball player. When she’s not playing sports she has a secret addiction to Disney princess movies, classic rock, reading, hanging with her family and her dog, Layla. She plans to attend and play volleyball at a four-year out-of-state college. She hopes to major in history and business, leading to a career in museum marketing.

Taggesell is involved in the SVHS community. He represents the students at school board meetings, serving as the Student Voice. He is a member in the Sonoma Future Farmers of America, a program through which he participates in speech and plant judging contests. He is on the SVHS swim and water polo teams. He plans on attending a four-year college to study waste management.
