Sonoma students build mobile kitchen for school district

Thanks to the hard work of two Sonoma Valley High students, the school district is now the proud owner of a mobile demonstration kitchen. The recently completed trailer was the supervised agriculture experience project of Chance Digulio (class of 2014) and senior Ryan Repetto.

The district funded the students’ project to the tune of $5,000 and now owns a mobile kitchen worth many times that amount. The students estimate that they logged more than 300 hours researching, planning and building the trailer, which they built entirely by hand and from scratch.

The trailer features a working sink with water tanks, a four burner propane stove, stainless steel counters, under counter storage, a self-venting roof and a working electrical outlet.

District Food Services Director Cody Williams is thrilled with the trailer.

He looks forward to scheduling healthy cooking demonstration at the school garden sites and to getting site staff out of their kitchens occasionally. “The possibilities are endless in terms of how this mobile kitchen could be used going forward,” he said.

Agriculture mechanics teacher Dan Aschwanden oversaw the project, which he said is the first of its kind for Sonoma in that is was funded by the district and resulted in a project that will be used by the schools.

“We are working hard to apply what the students are learning in their core classes to real world projects and this mobile kitchen is a great example of this in action.”
