Sonoma Stack 10U boys win tourney

With a stirring rally back from a second-round loss, the Sonoma Stack 10-years-old-and-under boys’ traveling baseball team recently got payback for a defeat and captured the annual Luau Tournament title at the Twin Creeks Sports Complex in Santa Clara.

Comprised of players from Sonoma Little League, the Sonoma Stack U10 baseball boys opened the tourney with a rousing 13-2 victory over Santa Cruz, but were then nipped 12-11 in the final inning by Los Gatos on the first tournament day.

In the second day of action, the Sonoma Stack earned a comeback 8-7 win over San Jose to reach the semifinals, where they upended top-seeded Belmont 4-2 behind the pitching of Brett Armitage and a clutch, two-out game-winning triple by Carson Smith, who would go on to be the tourney’s most valuable player.

Then, in the Luau Tournament championship game, the Valley boys faced Los Gatos in a rematch and avenged their earlier loss by building an early five-run lead and cruising to a 10-5 title triumph behind the solid pitching of Gianni Natuzzi.

The Luau Tourney champion Sonoma Stack U10 boys’ team – directed by manager Johnny Armitage and coaches Jason Masciorini, Jay Gruendle and Pete Smith – consists of Armitage, Natuzzi, Smith, Sam Cutting, Luc Demartini, Luke Giusto, Luke Gruendle, Enzo Masciorini, Reed Mckale, Bear Melendez, Finn Parker, Jaden Vides and Landen Waldrop.
