Sonoma squads run Crystal Springs, girls impressive 3rd

Traveling to Belmont to run in Saturday's annual Crystal Springs Invitational, the Sonoma Valley High School cross-country girls, led by junior Madeline Libbey, combined for a inspiring effort that earned them an impressive third-place finish in a field of 21 teams covering the 2.95-mile Crystal Springs course.

Libbey led the Lady Dragons with an outstanding fifth-place individual finish in 19 minutes, 17 seconds; followed by sophomore Maddie Cashel's 40th place in 20:56; freshman Quinn Jensen's 43rd in 21:05; sophomore Grace Cutting's 61st in 21:35; frosh Helena Goodman's 85th in 22:33; and sophomore Crystal Rodriguez's 110th in 23:46.

Sonoma's boy runners were 21st out of 24 teams, paced by junior Travis Claeys' 35th-place finish in 16:51; junior Leo Macedonio's 89th in 18:13; sophomore Angel Barcenas' 133rd in 19:01; sophomore Campbell Martin's 152nd in 19:41; and junior Austin Chapin's 171st in 20:50.

The Dragon cross-country teams will race Elsie Allen and Piner in a Sonoma County League tri-meet on the Foothill Course in Santa Rosa tomorrow, Oct. 15.

Sonoma's golfing girls were upended on the SCL road 275-319 by Healdsburg at the Tayman Park Course last Thursday, with freshman Candice Silkey finishing with a nine-hole round of 59, followed by junior Callie Hogan’s 61, frosh Alexandra Declercq's 62, frosh Hannah Ladouceur’s 64, and junior Isabel Garon’s 69.

The Lady Dragon host Piner at 3:30 p.m. today in their home finale at the Sonoma Golf Club, and then play Elsie Allen in the regular season finale Thursday, Oct. 16, in Santa Rosa.

Last Thursday the Sonoma tennis girls hit the SCL road to compete against league power Petaluma and dropped a 6-1 decision, with the Lady Dragons' lone win provided by senior Stephanie Angulo and junior Olivia Yazzolino’s 6-2, 7-5 over Grace Davis and Moriah Emmons at No. 3 doubles.

Sustaining Sonoma's losses were senior Cecilia Montano’s 2-6, 3-6 to Maddie Thomas at No. 1 singles; senior Hanna Lemaire’s 1-6, 1-6 to Nicoline Pederson at No. 2 singles; junior Emma Stanfield’s 1-6, 1-6 to Kim Garcia at No. 3 singles; and junior Brenda Maldonado’s 3-6, 1-6 to Emma Morgan at No. 4 singles; senior Isabel Hernandez and sophomore Kasey Richards’ 3-6, 1-6 to Ada Paine and Anna Sloth at No. 1 doubles; and junior Hannah Adams and sophomore Sydney Moore's 1-6, 4-6 to Kelly D'Ambrogia and Grace Slembrouck at No. 2 doubles.

The Lady Dragon netters host Analy in today's home finale at the high school courts, before playing Elsie Allen in Santa Rosa on Thursday, Oct. Oct. 16.
