Sonoma soccer squads sweep SCL openers

On the heels of playing tough, preaseason nonleague opponents, both Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity soccer boys’ and girls’ teams were primed for their Sonoma County League openers against Piner and took care of business on the home and road pitches, respectively, resulting in a pair of victories.

Sonoma’s varsity soccer girls started their SCL season Tuesday in Santa Rosa and pulled out a 1-0 win over Piner on the strength of a goal scored by senior all-league defender Maria Hawing.

The Lady Dragons faced longtime Analy in an SCL showdown in Sebastopol yesterday – results not available at presstime – and they will host league foe Healdsburg this Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Sonoma’s varsity soccer boys hosted the Prospectors at the high school field on Wednesday and, while not cashing in a multiple scoring opportunities, still held a 2-0 halftime lead.

Then, just a few minutes into the second-half of the SCL clash, Piner tallied a pair of quick goals for a 2-2 deadlock.

But the Dragons responded by finding the net with two more goals and securing the 4-2 SCL win behind a goal scored each by seniors Anthony García, Alejandro Echeverría, Brian Ruiz and Miguel Guillen, with assists by senior Paco Martínez and sophomore Edwin Reyes.

The Sonoma boys host defending champion Analy at 4 p.m. today on the high school field before hitting the SCL road for matches in Healdsburg on Wednesday, Sept. 18, and against El Molino in Forestville on Friday, Sept. 20.
