Sonoma soccer girls take 2, boys tie

With a tie to open the Sonoma County League season, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity soccer girls broke into the SCL win column in a big way, then battled into overtime to earn a second straight victory.

The Lady Dragons hosted Elsie Allen last Wednesday and dominated the match from beginning to end for a runaway 6-0 shutout victory behind the stellar play of senior goalie Christen Silkey, and freshman Amy Stanfield's impressive three-goal hat-trick.

Also leading Sonoma past the Lobo girls were and a goal each scored by seniors Alejandra Alvarez and Emily Miller, and sophomore Lorne Baskin.

On Friday in Santa Rosa, the Lady Dragons again controlled the action throughout their SCL clash with Piner, but couldn't find the net and the match slipped into overtime.

Sonoma finally punched one in when sophomore Mia Vanoni was assisted on a scoreless tie-breaking goal by senior Rian Verdu, who minutes later in the first overtime had another assist on a Vanoni goal, with junior Lilyanna Carranza tallying an unassisted goal in the second overtime for a 3-0 win over the Prospectors.

The Lady Dragons continue a three-game SCL road trip tomorrow night, Wednesday, Sept. 24, when they battle Analy in Sebastopol, and then play in Healdsburg on Friday evening, Sept. 26, before returning home to host El Molino on Wednesday, Oct. 1.

But, with four minutes remaining, Piner scored to even the match with Sonoma at 1-1.

The Dragon boys play night matches against Analy in Sebastopol tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 24, and in Healdsburg on Friday, Sept. 26.
