Sonoma soccer girls collar Lobos

While their defense set the tone with its shut-down play, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity soccer girls took control of ball possession and sophomore Lena Mallett converted one of their many offensive chances for a first-half goal and a 1-0 lead over Elsie Allen Friday night in Santa Rosa.

In the second half, the Lady Dragons remained stalwart on defense behind starting senior goalie Christen Silkey and Mallett, who wrapped up the match as goal-keeper, and the efforts of senior Gabby Reed and junior Annie Greenslade.

Then standout freshman Amy Stanfield tallied a pair of second half goals and Sonoma, with Silkey, getting a rare chance to play in the field, adding an assist, blanked the Lobo girls for a 3-0 win.

The Lady Dragons, who faced unbeaten SCL first-place Analy yesterday – results not available at presstime – host league foe Piner at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, under the Arnold Field lights.
