Knowing they were in for a tough battle with a hot-playing third-place team coming off an upset of one Sonoma County League frontrunners, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity soccer boys, got the hard-playing clash they expected from Elsie Allen at the high school field on Friday.

Throughout the hard-fought match, the Dragons made a flurry of promising runs at the Elsie Allen goal that came up empty of reaching the net on a majority of their chances and, with only one early goal, the Dragons found themselves in a 1-1 halftime tie, before falling behind 2-1 midway through the second half.

In the waning moments of regulation play, Sonoma senior Brian Ruiz headed home the 2-2 equalizer, his second goal of the match, off a long assist by sophomore Edwin Reyes, which sent the match into overtime, where more Dragon shots came up empty.

Then in the second overtime, the visiting Lobos tallied the 3-2 winner and finished their frontrunners sweep.

The Dragon boys still have a chance to earn an SCL co-championship when they host Analy in a must-win season finale match at 4 p.m. this Halloween Thursday, Oct. 31, on the high school field.
