In a key Sonoma County League midseason showdown Wednesday night in Santa Rosa, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity soccer boys and a good Elsie Allen team engaged in a fast-paced, full-match battle.

When the dust cleared, the Dragons had managed to outlast visiting Elsie Allen, with senior Paco Martínez’s second-half goal the difference in their hard-earned 1-0 victory, which kept them close on the tail of front-running defending champion Analy in the race for the SCL crown.

Sonoma’s boys host another tough SCL foe, Piner, at 4 p.m. today on the high school field, while the varsity soccer girls, who played visiting Piner yesterday – results not available at presstime – will host longtime league rival Analy at 4 p.m. this Tuesday, Oct. 8, on the high school field.

The tennis Lady Dragons traveled to Forestville on Tuesday and blanked El Molino 7-0 behind singles match victories by junior Cecilia Montano’s 6-4, 6-0 over Isabella Negri at No. 1 singles; junior Hanna Lemaire’s 6-0, 6-1 over Addie Pimpe at No. 2 singles; senior Michelle Stovall’s 6-0, 6-1 over Mary Rose Ohlin at No. 3 singles; and junior Annie Morgan’s 6-0, 6-1 over Erin Eck at No. 4 singles.

Sonoma’s doubles winners were senior Ava Gonzales’ and sophomore Brenda Maldonado’s 6-4, 6-1 over Maddie Richard and Erika Given at No. 1 doubles; senior Haley Glasner’s and sophomore Alison Gray’s 6-2, 6-1 over Grace Kan and Joy Risley at No. 2 doubles; and junior Stephanie Angulo’s and freshman Syndey Moore’s 6-2, 6-1 over Emma Seigler and Savannah Harrison at No. 3 doubles.

The Lady Dragon netters, who played Piner yesterday – results not available at presstime – will host SCL unbeaten, first-place Petaluma at 3:30 p.m. this Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the high school courts.

Sonoma’s young golfing girls couldn’t hang with visiting Healdsburg Tuesday at the Sonoma Golf Club course and were dealt a 295-344 SCL loss.

Pacing the Lady Dragons were senior Jacquie Peterson’s nine-hole round of 61, sophomore Callie Hogan’s 62, sophomore Kaylin Riebli’s 72, sophomore Anna De Smet’s 73, and junior Paige Kneff’s 76.

The Sonoma girl golfers traveled to Santa Rosa yesterday to face league foe Piner, with the results not available at presstime.

Sonoma’s cross country teams had their SCL-opening meets with Analy canceled because of trail repairs at the Ragle Ranch regional county park and they will be rescheduled for a later date.

The Dragon runners will next compete in an SCL tri-meet with Petaluma and Piner at the Foothill Park course in Santa Rosa on Wednesday, Oct. 9, when Sonoma’s water polo boys host Cardinal Newman at 4 p.m. in the Sonoma Aquatic Center’s pool.
