Sonoma Raceway will again have lots of sizzle in 2014

Following Sonoma Raceway’s recent announcement of the return of the popular NASCAR Toyota/Save Mart 350 weekend kicking off, as well as highlighting Friday through Sunday, June 20 to 22, the red-hot 2014 summer motorsports action in the Valley, are the NHRA, IndyCar and World Touring events.

With historic car racing again opening and closing Sonoma Raceway’s 2014 major event season with two unique weekends – the Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival on May 17 and 18, and the Oct. 4 and 5 Classic Sports Racing Group Charity Challenge – summer comes alive for the 26th year with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Then drag-racing fans will be treated to back-to-back weekends of action, highlighted by the 27th annual NHRA Sonoma Nationals the weekend of July 25 through 27, which are preceded by the NHRA Division 7 Drag Races July 18 through 20.

Making its 10th appearance on the twisting Valley circuit will be the IndyCar Series, featuring the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, taking place the weekend of Aug. 22 through 24.

The final summer major event will bring international flair to Sonoma for the third consecutive year with the FIA World Touring Car Championship from Sept. 20 to 21.

Sonoma Raceway’s popular Wednesday Night Drags program continues every Wednesday evening through Nov. 13, and includes the motorsport of drifting.

The Wednesday Night Drags are open to anyone with a driver’s license, who can race any vehicle or motorcycle they bring to the world-famous quarter-mile drag strip, provided it passes a simple tech inspection.

Gates open for “Drag and Drift” at 3:30, time runs begin at 4, and the racing takes place from 6:30 to 10 p.m. – drifting from 4 to 10 p.m. – with the Wednesday Night Drags cost being $25 for competitors, $15 for students with a high school ID and $10 for spectators. The drifting costs are $40 with pre-registration and $50 at the gate.
