Winter sports for the 2013-14 season is officially underway for Sonoma Valley High School, with the boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams tipping off their campaigns with Tuesday evening’s annual Foundation Games, which benefit Sonoma County scholarship programs, but don’t count on a team’s record.
In their Foundation Game matchup at Pfeiffer Gym, the Dragon boys hosted Casa Grande and dropped a 56-48 decision, before opening their nonleague preseason at Ukiah on Wednesday – results not available at presstime – and they will remain on the road until Tuesday, Dec. 10, when they host San Marin.
Sonoma’s varsity basketball girls were handed a 60-28 defeat by a strong Cardinal Newman team in their Tuesday Foundation Game in Santa Rosa.
The Lady Dragons, who held their annual alumnae game Wednesday evening, open their nonleague preseason schedule by hosting both Sir Francis Drake and Napa tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 30, and Tuesday, Dec. 3, respectively, in Pfeiffer Gym. The freshmen start at 4:30, the junior varsity begin at 6, and the varsity plays at 7:30 p.m. both nights.
Sonoma’s varsity girls will then host their 17th annual Dragon Classic, with the eight-team tournament opening this Thursday, Dec. 5, continuing on Friday, Dec. 6, and concluding Saturday, Dec. 7, in Pfeiffer Gym.
Joining the Lady Dragons in the tourney field are defending champion Montgomery, Analy, Menlo-Atherton, Northgate, San Marin, Terra Linda and Vintage.
The Sonoma varsity hoops girls will also be hosting this year’s Martin Luther King Day Sonoma County League versus North Bay League challenge in Pfeiffer Gym on Monday, Jan. 20, 2014.
Matching up for the SCL-versus-NBL games are Analy and Casa Grande; Piner and Rancho Cotate; Elsie Allen and Ukiah; Healdsburg and Windsor; Petaluma and Montgomery; and Sonoma and Maria Carrillo.
