Sonoma girls rise in soccer, tennis, fall in golf, water polo

Last week’s fall sports action ended with mixed results for six Sonoma Valley High School teams.

While the Lady Dragons were victorious in soccer and tennis, they were upended in golf and water polo, while the Dragon boys dropped both soccer and water-polo decisions.

Playing their third straight match on the Sonoma County League road Friday night, Sonoma’s varsity soccer girls overran Healdsburg for a 6-0 triumph at Recreation Park, with senior goalie Christen Silkey and the defense posting a shutout.

Also leading Sonoma were freshman Amy Stanfield's two goals, and one goal each by seniors Alejandra Alvarez and Emily Miller, and juniors Lilyanna Carranza and Mia Vanoni.

The Lady Dragons host El Molino at 4 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the high school field.

Sonoma’s girls’ golf team was edged 284-302 by SCL rival Petaluma, which was led by medalist Jane Catarozoli’s career-best nine-hole round as she fired an impressive 4-over-par 40 on the challenging Sonoma Golf Club course last Thursday.

Playing at SCL rival Healdsburg last Thursday night, Sonoma's varsity boys’ soccer team yielded a first-half goal, but then played shutdown defense the rest of the way.

Unfortunately, the Dragon boys, who face league foe El Molino in Forestville today, couldn’t tally an equalizer and ended up saddled with a 1-0 loss.

In Marin County Athletic League matches in Larkspur last Tuesday, Sonoma's varsity boys and girls' water polo squads – hosting San Marin in their home openers on Thursday, Oct. 2, at the Sonoma Aquatic Center – were both sunk by Marin Academy.

The Dragon boys came up short by a 15-8 margin and were paced by sophomore Jackson Mighell’s three-goal hat-trick, junior Joey Dukes’ two goals, and one goal each by senior Adam Curry, junior Jack Lewis and sophomore Owen Summers.
