Sonoma girls end duals unbeaten

For the sixth and final Sonoma County League dual meet, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity cross-country girls defeated El Molino Wednesday on the 2.7-mile Maxwell Farms Regional Park course to finish the SCL dual meets undefeated.

The Lady Dragons claimed the top four finishes in their 17-44 SCL dual-meet season sweeping win over visiting El Molino, with junior Madeline Libbey leading the way by winning the girls' race to remain unbeaten in the six league duals.

Libbey won the girls' race in a time of 17 minutes, 46 seconds; followed in second place by Sonoma teammates freshman Quinn Jensen's second place in 18:08; sophomore Grace Cutting's third in 19:45; sophomore Maddie Cashel's fourth in 19:46; sophomore Crystal Rodriguez's seventh in 21:09; frosh Eliza Neeley's eighth in 121:24; sophomore Erika Reyes' ninth in 22:15; and frosh Helena Goodman's 12th in 24:39.

"Our girls won and finished the regular season 6-0, which is the first 6-0 finish ever for a Sonoma cross-country team, boys or girls, in the SCL since we expanded from six to seven schools in 1997," said Sonoma coach John Litzenberg. "I'm extremely proud of these girls and what we've accomplished (as a team) so far, but we've still got work to do. We need to win the SCL finals meet to be sole league champs – Petaluma is 5-1. We have a talented and competitive group of girls who I know will do their best at the SCL finals."

In the varsity boys' race, the Dragon runners placed third through seventh en route to a 25-36 triumph over visiting El Molino. They finish with a 2-4 SCL record, which they'll take into the league finals with a chance to end the season in a third-place tie.

Leading Sonoma past the Lions were junior Travis Claeys' third-place finish in the boys' race with a time of 15:22; followed by junior Leo Macedonio's fourth in 16:21; senior Ian Sloop's fifth in 16:37; senior Return Bongiovani's sixth in 17:35; sophomore Angel Barcenas' seventh in 17:50; sophomore Campbell Martin's eighth in 18:01; and senior Graham Herder's ninth in 18:55.

The Dragon cross-country teams will next compete in the SCL championship meets, which take place on Saturday, Nov. 8, on the 3.1-mile Spring Lake course in Santa Rosa.
