Sonoma drops water polo home opener

In the home debut of the new season Wednesday afternoon at the Sonoma Aquatic Club pool, Sonoma Valley High School’s water polo program, under the direction of Flynn O’Brien, hosted strong nonleague San Rafael teams and the varsity Dragon boys lost 16-1, while the combined girls and junior varsity squad won 12-9.

The water polo Dragons played at Vintage yesterday – results not available at presstime – and will compete at Redwood Empire League rival Ukiah this Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Sonoma’s boys’ and girls’ varsity soccer teams battled tough nonleague opponents Casa Grande and Windsor on Tuesday and finished with a 1-1 tie and 5-2 loss, respectively.

In Petaluma, sophomore Edwin Reyes scored the Dragon boys’ goal off an assist by senior Anthony García, while at the high school field, the Lady Dragons’ two goals were tallied by freshman Annie Lilienthal.

The Dragon boys – currently playing in the annual Bay Cities Invitational – next open their Sonoma County League season by hosting Piner at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the high school field, while Sonoma’s soccer girls also start SCL play against Piner at 4 p.m. this Tuesday, Sept. 10, in Santa Rosa.

With their SCL season underway, Sonoma’s golfing girls were dealt a 294-347 defeat by host Analy on Tuesday at the Bodega Harbour Golf Course, and yesterday they played at Healdsburg – results not available at presstime – with their home opener set for 3:30 p.m. this Tuesday, Sept. 10, when they host Piner.

Lady Dragons were paced against Analy by senior Jacquie Peterson’s nine-hole round of 62, sophomore Callie Hogan’s 65, sophomore Lucy Haughton’s 71, sophomore Kaylin Riebli’s 75, and sophomore Isabel Garon’s 76.
