Sonoma Community Center hosts India photo exhibit

The Sonoma Community Center presents “Auspicious India,” an exhibition of travel photography by students of the Solano Community College Photography Department, from Sept. 5 through 26 in Gallery 212.

Organized by Professor Ron Zak, the exhibit features photographs taken by 16 artists during a photography study program in India.

The artists include David Alosi, Morry Angell, Kaeti Bailie, Patricia Brooks, Kathleen Carter, Patty Daffurn, Juan Diaz, Denise Ewings, Christine Ford, Carol Gotti, Windsor Green, Maureen Kelly, Carol Mills, Arturo Ramos, Woods Stoeltzing, Mary Woodward and Ron Zak.

The public is invited to the opening reception in SCC’s Gallery 212 from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5.

Zak, a professional photographer, has been leading annual photography study programs abroad since 1989. Besides experiencing the thrill of a new country and culture first hand, Zak’s students focus intently on photography – engaging locals, documenting their environment and capturing daily life abroad. Day-by-day, students create a body of work and meet as a group in the evenings to critique their work. After each trip, their collective works are published in book form and exhibited locally.

Like the exhibit, each book offers a glimpse into a foreign culture and the momentary connections shared between people.

Morry Angell writes in the forward of this year’s travel book: “A curious term, auspicious, meaning favored by good fortune; prosperous, opportune, favorable – perhaps not the first words that would come to mind to describe the country of India. But as our group of photographers discovered while traveling to this faraway land, India might just be the embodiment of all of those sentiments and more.”

For more information about the exhibition, call the Sonoma Community Center at 938-4626, ext. 1. Sonoma Community Center is located at 276 E. Napa St., Sonoma.

SCC’s Arts Education Gallery is open Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
