Sonoma boys victorious, girls upended, Albrecht injured

Hoping to bounce back from their first Sonoma County League loss after three SCL wins, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball boys overcame a slow and tenative first half against an aggressive Elsie Allen team Tuesday night in Pfeiffer Gym with a hard-played second half that produced a 47-40 triumph.

The SCL second-place Dragon boys next host visiting defending champion Analy at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, in Pfeiffer Gym.

Unbeaten and sitting alone atop the SCL standings, Sonoma’s varsity girls’ basketball team was suddenly sent into a state of shock with the loss of its top player to a shoulder injury in Monday's Martin Luther King Jr. Day SCL versus North Bay League Challenge on its home court.

After junior Mackenzie Albrecht, their top scorer and rebounder, got hurt falling to the floor – the extent of her injury and playing status wasn't known at presstime – the stunned Lady Dragons couldn't hang with Maria Carrillo (NBL) and dropped a 44-29 MLK Day decision.

But the SCL first-place Sonoma girls have no time to dwell on the Carrillo loss, because they have more important business at hand in regrouping to play without the athletic ability and team leadership of Albrecht, as they host league foe Healdsburg at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Pfeiffer Gym.
