Soccer Dragons hammer Healdsburg

Both the Sonoma Valley High School varsity soccer boys and girls hosted Healdsburg in Sonoma County League matches earlier this week and turned in strong team performances that resulted in a pair of convincing victories.

In an emotional ceremony before Wednesday night’s SCL clash at Arnold Field, the Lady Dragons honored their 10 seniors, including Alejandra Alvarez, Estefania Barriga, Maddie Dougherty, Raegen Hedley, Shelley Marmaduke, Emily Miller, Monica Ramirez, Gabby Reed, Christen Silkey and Rian Verdu.

Then, riding an emotional wave, the senior-led Lady Dragons overwhelmed visiting Healdsburg with a barrage of goals throughout the match that culminated into a rousing 10-2 triumph.

While the defense kept the Greyhound girls in check, Sonoma’s offense was fueled by Ramirez’s two scored goals and two assists; freshman Amy Stanfield’s two goals; sophomore Katie Stovall’s one goal and one assist; one goal each by Verdu, Miller, Silkey, Alvarez, and sophomore Lorne Baskin; and sophomores Hanna Maillard and Brianda Prudente’s one assist apiece.

“Overall is was a fantastic night, the crowd was the biggest I have seen at a girls soccer match here in town – very lively and into it – and the seniors put on a show,” said Sonoma head coach Mike Verdu.

The Lady Dragons wrap up their SCL season facing El Molino in Forestville on Monday night, Oct. 27.

Sonoma’s varsity soccer boys controlled both halves of their match by playing solid defense, while stepping up offensively en route to defeating the visiting Greyhounds 3-1 Tuesday afternoon on the high school field.

The Dragons were led past Healdsburg by junior Edwin Reyes’ two goals scored, with junior Teodoro Magaña tallying a goal, and sophomore Beto Zaragoza adding an assist.

Sonoma’s soccer boys hosted Elsie Allen in last night’s home finale at Arnold Field – results not available at presstime – and honored their seniors, including Brian Casillas, Gregorio De la Cruz, Jose “Ángel” García, Erick García, Eduardo Hernández, Haliel Juárez, Andriw Echeverría, Chris Molina, Edgardo Pamatz, Sam Sonheim, Antelmo Vázquez and Alexis Zamudio.
