Heading into the final week of the Sonoma County League season, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity soccer boys and girls began mounting momentum for the postseason, which they are on track to reach, by posting solid SCL victories over El Molino.
It was senior night Wednesday evening at Arnold Field and the second-place Sonoma boys delivered a 4-3 win over the visiting Lions – results not available at presstime.
Before the match, Sonoma honored its 10 seniors – Andy Chávez, Paco Martínez, Brian Ruiz, Alejandro Echeverría, Anthony Echeverría, Max Floerke, Anthony García, Miguel Guillén, Zack Thompson and Jesus Molina.
The Dragons, who have a bye today, play at longtime league rival Petaluma this Wednesday, Oct. 23.
Sonoma’s varsity soccer girls backed up a big road win over Healdsburg by controlling the tempo of play against El Molino throughout Tuesday’s SCL match in Forestville. After not converting on several good scoring opportunities, the Lady Dragons finally broke through for a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
Securing the win for the Lady Dragons with the match’s lone goal was senior Kirsten Hodgson, who lasered a free kick from 50 yards out past the El Molino goalie and into the net for the emphatic score.
“That was a big shot by Kirsten (Hodgson), who played a strong game along with Katie Stovall, Maria Hawing, Maddie Dougherty, Annie Greenslade and our goalkeeper Christen Silkey,” said Sonoma head coach Julio Leon.
The Sonoma girls had a bye yesterday and will play their regular season finale at longtime SCL rival Petaluma this Tuesday night, Oct. 22.
