SMAART kick-off aimed at teen artists

A new nonprofit dedicated to supporting youth interested in the arts in Sonoma Valley will host a kick-off party on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Burgers and Vine, immediately following the Valley of the Moon Vintage Festival Parade, scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

SMAART is a Sonoma-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a location and means for creative minded students to develop their talents in a supportive learning environment. SMAART intends to provide a wide range of artistic disciplines which will give teens the resources and support to prepare them for a career in the art field of their choice.

SMAART is an acronym that stands for: Supplying Multiple Art and Activity Resources for Teens

The group’s goal is to provide affordable instruction and support courses in the arts and to supply resources for after school continuing education programs in the arts. SMAART also plans to offer many courses and activities as work study. Each course of study may include an internship program that will provide students with an opportunity to work in the arts.

“We have outlets for children that want to pursue sports, or academics, but the arts seem to be falling through the cracks these days” said Robert Wilson, founder of the group. “We intend on supporting the youth that want to focus on music, dance, photography, film and video arts; providing a clubhouse environment for collaboration with peers as well as lessons from paid instructors”

Interested parties can attend the event at Burgers and Vine on Saturday, Sept. 27, starting at 8 p.m. or see the website at smaartsonoma.org.

They can also contact the founder, Robert Wilson at 732-3724 or by sending an email to rob@smaartsonoma.org. Burgers and Vine is at 400 First St. E. on the corner of the Sonoma Plaza.
