By finishing in the top-three of their weight classes at last Saturday’s Sonoma County League championship tournament, six Sonoma Valley High School varsity wrestlers qualified to compete in the North Coast Section championships, which start today and conclude tomorrow, Saturday, March 1, in Newark.

The six NCS-qualifying Dragon grapplers include seniors Harris Meglen and Max Schimm; junior Jack Biaggi; and sophomores Austin Beltran, Dalton Elster and Brandon Ruiz.  Meglen, Schimm and Elster were SCL individual title winners,  while Biaggi, Beltran and Ruiz each took home third-place league medals.

Going into today’s NCS opening round, Sonoma’s Meglen is seeded ninth at 115 pounds and will face Willits junior Jacob Jepson; Schimm will battle Novato senior Karl Beckman at 147; Ruiz will take on Fort Bragg junior Ricky Cavender at 162; Biaggi will square off with Ukiah junior Julian Lopez at 182; and Elster is a late scratch in the heavyweight division because of a recently sustained concussion.
