Showcases feature poets, pianos

The Sonoma Theatre Alliance’s Sonoma Nights Showcase series will present two shows this month: “An Evening of Poetry,” featuring six Sonoma poets, on Monday, Aug. 18; and “A Grand Night,” a piano concert on Wednesday, Aug. 20. Both shows begin at 7 p.m. in Andrews Hall at the Sonoma Community Center, 276 E. Napa St.

The Showcase is a series of intimate performances by regional artists in a variety of genres – music, staged readings, one-person shows, dance, and cabaret acts – presented on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

Poet Shotsie Gorman has recruited a group of local poets – Judy Altura, Joan Brady, Lin Marie deVincent, Michael Morris, Jonah Raskin and Stacey Tuel – to join him in reading their works on Aug. 18. The evening will include live music, wine and refreshments. Entrance is on a “pay what you will” basis.

The Aug. 20 concert will feature four accomplished pianists – John Dinwiddie, Deborah Knapp, Jack Power, and Alexia Stevens – playing selections ranging from ragtime to classical on the Sonoma Community Center’s Kawai grand piano. Tickets are $12 at svbo.org or by calling the Sonoma Community Center at 938-4626, ext. 1.
