Capping a highly successful 2013-14 season with with 11 teams in grades four-through-eight qualifying for the playoffs, Sonoma’s St. Francis Solano’s CYO basketball program achieved a postseason title bonanza with eight squads reaching the finals and seven champions being crowned.
With seven teams claiming titles, St. Francis had the best CYO showing of all the programs in the North Bay.
In wrapping up two of the CYO champions, who were both directed by head coach Marco Girish, the St. Francis eighth-grade hoops girls won the CYO Division-2 title by upending favored unbeaten St. Rose 36-26.
The CYO Division-2 champion St. Francis eighth-grade girls’ team, coached by Girish and and his assistant Mike Minigan, consisted of Jenna Ebert, Alexia Lema, Danielle Matteo, Mary Minigan, Alyssa Schimm, Jasmine Simpson-Gomez, Lauren Smith, Amy Stanfield and Sydney Von Gober.
In claiming their CYO Division-1 crown, the St. Francis fourth-grade boys posted a 9-1 regular-season record and, as the playoff’s top seed, defeated St Eugene’s 33-24 to win the title.
Comprising the St. Francis CYO Division-1 champion fourth-grade boys’ team – directed by head coach Girish and assistant coaches Nikolai Mathison and Mike Sangiacomo – were Brett Armitage, Rollo Benstead, Adam Duffield, Dominic Girish, Giancarlo Guererro, Anders Mathison, Tyler Oda, Gavin Rognlien, Robby Sangiacomo and Bennett Steiger.
