Salmon group’s dinner here in March

If you are a salmon angler or someone who enjoys dining on wild salmon, then you should buy a ticket to the Golden Gate Salmon Association’s first-ever Sonoma dinner on Friday, March 14, at Ramekins. Co-host will be local vintner Sam Sebastiani.

Sam has been an angler and conservationist all his life and established the bird sanctuary wetlands in Schellville more than a decade ago, for which he was named Conservationist of the Year by the Environmental Protection Agency. Since then, he has established another wetlands enhancement area in Nebraska on the North Platte River called Winemaker’s Island.

Semi-retired, Sam still makes wine for very limited distribution, including a chardonnay, sangiovese and zinfandel under the La Chertosa label. The only place you can find his wines in Sonoma (other than at the upcoming dinner) is at Sonoma Market and at the Swiss Hotel.

Sam and his wife, Robin, split their time between Sonoma and their ranch in Nebraska.

The Ramekins venue for the GGSA dinner has been donated by Darius and Sarah Anderson, and the salmon preservation fundraising event features Sam’s wines and fine food. Of course, there will be silent and open auctions, and the chance to compare fish stories with all the folks we share the water with and raise funds for GGSA and its salmon restoration projects.

The herring spawn in the Bay is the big news in local fishing this week. When these tasty little fish that look a lot like sardines start laying their eggs, the dinner bell rings loudly for all critters, finny and otherwise, in the Bay. The spawn usually heats up the sturgeon and striped-bass fishing and there are already indications that this is happening.

Keith Fraser, at Loch Lomond Bait Shop, has fresh herring and mud shrimp, which are the best bait for sturgeon, that are rolling all over the place in the Bay near the Pump House. Keith can also book you a party boat for Bay fishing. Call him at 415-456-0321.

Capt. Rick Powers, of Bodega Bay Sportfishing, is offering “Crab and Dab” trips this month out of Bodega Bay. He takes clients out for the always-tasty sand dabs as well as dungeness crab. The fishing has been excellent so far this month with anglers catching as many sand dabs as they want, plus limits of crab. Call Rick at 875-3344 to book a trip.

Tom Culligan returned last week from a few days fly-fishing on the Trinity River, where he caught several nice steelhead, including one that measured nearly 30 inches.

Fly-fishing on the lower Sacramento River from Redding to Red Bluff has been excellent this week, as has the fishing on the Pit River. The upper Sacramento River is offering fair to good action for those who can endure the cold.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife will be stocking rainbow trout in Santa Rosa’s Lake Ralphine and Marin’s Bon Tempe Lake next week.
