Stop the ‘farmers’ market facade
EDITOR: Even with all the hype about a “new” Tuesday Night Farmers Market supposedly more focused on the farmers, it is interesting that the two recent articles, one by Kathleen Hill, the other by Lorna Sheridan, mentioned food trucks and their schedule, food booths, music and other hijinks in the first part of the story. It’s only at the end of the story is there mention of farmers. At least Kathleen mentioned them by name, but the article by Lorna in today’s paper grouped the farmers together as “20 farmers expected to participate.”
Is it a farmers market or not? With 19 hot-food vendors (counted from the list in the paper) and the many crafts and other booths, it puts the farmers in the minority. It’s a sad story when farmers can’t sell out of what they bring to the market. They work hard, they pay others to work hard, they bring healthy, nutritious, fresh and fabulous produce. Yet, they have a hard time selling produce when there are such other temptations as the hot food vendors will bring! Who wants to buy carrots or turnips when they can have pizza, corn dogs or delicious Thai or Himalayan food? You know what they say about shopping at the supermarket? Don’t go hungry or you will buy too much food. In this case, the reverse is true. Fill yourself up with tasty, filling food before you do your fresh food shopping and you won’t want to buy those vegetables!
And with such fabulous entertainment and good food, once someone gets settled on the lawn with their picnic or plate of food and a glass of wine, who wants to get up and get serious about their nutrition for the week.
I would propose that there should be two separate events on two separate days of the week. A farmers market and a separate Food Truck Night. Don’t try to build an event pretending that it’s a farmers market when there is so much else going on. Just because a food vendor doesn’t come in a spiffy truck doesn’t mean they aren’t a “food truck” – they are side-tracking the intent of the farmers market, making it hard for customers to choose between yummy tasty prepared food and fresh fruit and vegetables. Many people come with a limited supply of money (a mistake, in my opinion) and then spend the bulk of it on prepared food, quite forgetting better nutrition and health from all those fresh vegetables and fruits.
I sincerely hope that the tweaks that have been made to the organization and operation of the new Tuesday Night Farmers Market will help the farmers. It will certainly help if everyone who attends buys something from several of the farmers before they sit down to enjoy their glass of wine and delicious plate of hot prepared food.

EDITOR: I am reaching out to you to implore you to edit out any further references to “reached out...” It has become damnably trite and extremely annoying.
Try “contacted,” “sought the opinion of,” “checked with” and any other more suitable equivalents.
