Letter of the Day: If dogs disappeared, would the earth be overrun by kibble?
Editor, Index-Tribune:
I think some well-intentioned people are missing the essential point about allowing dogs onto Montini. Montini is called a preserve, and not a recreational area, for a very specific reason. It was secured and dedicated to preserve the ecology of that area.
Dogs are not part of that ecology (nor are the cows in nearby pastureland), nor part of any ecology for that matter.
Dogs are domestic animals. If all the dogs in the world disappeared, Nature would not notice, but if all the coyotes disappear, She surely would, as their main diet consists of rodents. Most wild animals have short, hard lifespans. Let’s not make it harder for them.
