‘Tis the season to be jolly – and to merrily greet total strangers as you pass them on the street. In our latest sonomanews.com poll, we asked readers how they greet, or like to be greeted by, other folks during these weeks of various holiday festivities. In a trendy blow to political correctness, “Merry Christmas” was preferred by more than half of respondents, with “happy holidays” a healthy second. However Sonomans prefer their seasonal salutations, of course, is up to each of us – but we do know this: A warm smile knows no cultural boundaries. Merry greetings, Sonoma!

Here are few of the more impassioned poll responses:

Happy Christmas. Christmas, Dec. 25, a legal holiday is the day we are celebrating. “Holiday” actually means Holy Day... so, in essence, happy holidays means... a happy Holy Day, which is not what most people mean when they say this.?

Lots of holidays from many different cultures/places happen in this season. I have no problem whatsoever, though, if someone wishes me a Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah or Blessed Solstice.

Know your audience! If you’re at Midnight Mass at Grace Cathedral it’s probably cool to say Merry Christmas. But, if you’re at your favorite Middle Eastern market buying baba ganoush, probably stick to Happy Holidays!
