Editor, Index-Tribune:
This month, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley lost its treasured leader, Dave Pier (“Pier stepping down from Boys & Girls Club,” Jan. 16). He was the ultimate symbol of what we celebrate on Martin Luther King Day: service.
For almost two decades, he has given selflessly to the community of Sonoma, and he wasn’t even given a single thank you in return. As someone who gave his entire heart to the Boys & Girls Clubs, he embodies the MLK sentiment, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” He has helped more than a thousand of Sonoma’s sons and daughters strive for healthy, safe, educated lives. He has been humble and remains to be exalted.
I hope you will remember him this MLK month, and when you see him in town, express your gratitude. He reminds us that the vision of Martin Luther King, Jr. lives on in the daily actions of individuals.
To those who somehow missed his significance ... I hope you will use this holiday to reflect on what it means to live in a small, family town devoted to community. This is Sonoma, and we can do better.
