There’s a riot goin’ on

Editor, Index-Tribune:

I am a college student taking a course in philosophy. We were encouraged to write a letter of opinion to a local newspaper about a controversial current event. I chose to express my opinion about the recent riots in Oakland. I believe there is no reason to riot in Oakland for issues that are states away.

Yes, it is nice to see that the Brown family has support all over the nation, but Oakland does not need to destroy its own town to show its support. If Oakland citizens really wanted to do something that would result in benefiting the situation, they would try to start a reform movement to create a law for more officer surveillance to help stop police brutality; however, this is a situation that will not be helped with anger and disruption. An officer’s job is to keep cities safe; so let them do their job and let us stand for a more secure and beneficial surveillance of police officers in our nations. They are supposed to fight for us, not against us, so together, let us make this happen.

Hot to Trot

Editor, Index-Tribune:

We would like to express our profound gratitude to all who participated in the 8th annual Sonoma Turkey Trot. This fabulous event, staged to benefit your local, all-volunteer Meals on Wheels of Sonoma program was conceived of by three women who deserve special mention: Gina Clyde, Ann Marie Sebastiani and Lynn Malouf. For the past eight years they have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the success of this worthwhile and fun event. Each year has been better attended and raised more money than the one before. This year, for the first time, enough money was raised to pay our annual rent. Needless to say, this is invaluable to our ongoing efforts.

On behalf of all our volunteers and clients, thank you!

Dog day afternoon

Editor, Index-Tribune:

I just got home from ringing the bell for Friends In Sonoma Helping (FISH) in front of Sonoma Market. I brought Gus my Irish Wolfhound/reindeer adorned with antlers to the delight of the many nice and generous people of Sonoma. I want to especially thank two ladies in the parking lot for coming to our rescue. After our two-hour shift we were loading up 185-pound Gus for the day. We use a ramp and he usually runs up with no problem. We think he might have slipped and fell. When we made sure he was OK we tried again.

He was scared, so no luck. I was just getting ready to walk the six miles home when two women came to our rescue. With their help we were successful. One of the ladies wasn’t very happy with our technique. I’m sorry she felt that way. We would never jeopardize Gus’s welfare; he is a cherished and loved part of our family.

Picking up a 185-pound dog is not an option (no matter how strong you are). We’ve tried and it scared him. The other lady (with the towel) was wonderful and very helpful. I didn’t get their names and would like to share some homemade mulberry jam with them. Our number is in the book. Thank you again and merry Christmas.
