Non-existent hotel problem

Editor, Index-Tribune:

Next week, voters will chart the future of our small town by deciding whether we reverse our economic progress or preserve our ability to consider well-developed, tasteful hotel proposals in the future.

The Hotel Limitation Measure would ban the construction of virtually all new hotels in the City of Sonoma while preventing hotels such as El Pueblo Inn, Inn at Sonoma or MacArthur Place from adding a single room to their establishments. With a stringent moratorium on new hotels across our city, the alternative scenarios are more hotels at the gateways to Sonoma coupled with tourists who choose to drive through Sonoma instead of staying here and enjoying all that our community has to offer.

The city’s independently-conducted impact report concluded that Measure B has many shortcomings and “other types of development that could be more intense in terms of scale, massing and traffic generation are not addressed.”

Sonoma does not have a hotel problem. We must fight to preserve our quality of life, protect our voice in the planning process and ensure Sonoma can continue to consider tasteful hotel development opportunities in the future. Please, join me and vote “no” on Measure B.
