No-cost mammograms available in October

Sonoma Valley Hospital’s Women’s Health Center is offering no-cost mammograms for uninsured and underinsured Sonoma Valley women over the age of 40 during October.

The screening program, known as Project Pink, is made available as a community service through a special grant from the Sonoma Valley Hospital Foundation.

“Early detection is key to survival rates,” said Selma Blanusa, Foundation executive director. “The American Cancer Society recommends that women over 40 have a mammogram every year, and we want to help ensure that women in Sonoma have access to this important screening.”

Blanusa noted that Project Pink has provided hundreds of free screenings for women in the Sonoma Valley, adding, “We hope that this October, even more women will take advantage of the program.”

The program is open for women who:

• Live or work in Sonoma Valley;

• Have not had a mammogram within the past 12 months;

• Have difficulty affording a mammogram because they are uninsured, underinsured, or have a high deductible;

• Are 40 years or older.

To take advantage of the program, a woman must obtain an order from her physician, who can fax the order to Sonoma Valley Hospital at 935-5271.

Women who don’t have a physician can contact the Women’s Health Center at 935-5215 and hospital staff will help them.

To make an appointment, call 935-5215 to make an appointment. Be sure to tell the scheduler that you want to take advantage of the Foundation’s Project Pink no cost mammogram program.

Let the scheduler know if you have had mammograms at another facility in the past.

Screenings will be conducted at the Sonoma Valley Hospital’s Women’s Health Center, 246 Perkins St., Sonoma. Bilingual support staff is available.
