The Sonoma County Latinx Student Congress and La Luz Center provided transportation to various Sonoma Valley High School student leaders to attend to the Sept. 8 San Francisco Climate March.

'Thanks to these organizations, students were given a platform to call for change and learn more about climate justice,' said attendee Jacqueline Torres.

The march took place a few days before world leaders, researchers and activists arrived in San Francisco for the Global Climate Action Summit, organized by the UN and Governor Jerry Brown.

March organizers estimated that is ended up being the largest climate rally on the west coast. San Francisco joined cities around the world in the 'Rise for Climate' movement to demand urgent action to reduce the world's reliance on fossil fuels and increase green energy.

The Latino Student Congress creates a monthly space for alternative education to take place at Sonoma State University, primarily amongst high school students of color, while mentoring these students on their respective campus to develop as leaders in between monthly meetings. She added that the Latinx Student Congress has also helped high school students with the recent walkout and with voter pre-register.

The LSC offers workshops and develops campaigns around issues that directly affect the lives of local students.

'Overall, their commitment to advocacy, representing our people, and making leaders out of students is admirable,' said Torres.

Torres invites all interested local youth to attend the next meeting of the Latinx Student Congress on from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Sonoma State University Hub. Learn more on Facebook: Sonoma County Latinx Student Congress or call 520-471-0344
