Sonoma students on stage in ‘Spring Awakening’

The show opens on Thursday night.|

Sonoma Academy director Jen Cote describes the rock musical “Spring Awakening” as a timeless story about love, lust and coming of age. Based on the controversial 19th century play by German playwright Frank Wedekind, Steven Sater’s adaptation examines the struggles of teenagers discovering their tumultuous sexuality and coping with coming of age in a repressed and rigid society. Although the play is set in the past, Cote says the characters face conflicts relevant to today’s teenagers: academic pressure, abuse, love, loss, sexuality questioning, friendship struggles and emotional distress.

The Sonoma Valley cast members include Megan Dewees as Ilsa, Ana Harb as Thea, and Mikey Smart among the reformatory boys and in the ensemble. Tessa Devine is the student band director and plays the electric bass. Dewees is the student fight choreographer and Eliza Harb did the poster and program design.

The play is set to music by alternative rock musician Duncan Sheik.

The Tony-award winning rock score will be performed by the Sonoma Academy student band. The show is double cast.

The show will run at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8, 9 and 10 at 7 p.m.; at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, and at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11.
