Sonoma Valley High School held its annual “Convention,” or student government election, on March 24.

“The leadership students worked extremely hard on leading the event as they coordinated schedules with students, staff and faculty,” said SVHS leadership teacher and Vice Principal Francisco Manriquez. “There were many hours put in behind the scenes and the end product spoke for itself.”

The day, filmed in person with only key members attending and aired remotely, included the singing of the “Star Spangled Banner” by Sam Cutting, games, “Dragon Court” discussion, a lip-sync event, a musical guest, some rapping and dancing, a Q&A with the candidates and, finally, the election.

The winning team, Slate 3, is composed of rising seniors Emma Melendy, Caroline Studdert, Fernanda Alvarez and Samuel Richards. They will lead the SVHS student body in the 2021-2022 school year. Studdert will serve as the Student Voice, representing the school at the monthly Sonoma Valley Unified School District board meetings.

The complete event can be watched online at svhsvideo.com.

The leadership team estimates there were more than 1,100 viewers and they were pleased with high voter participation.

“The infusion of life back on campus was really motivating,” said video arts teacher Peter Hansen, who provided the video footage, with assistance from event producer and photographer Isabella Quilicci, producer A.J. Riebli and “streaming wizard” Sean Callahan (class of 2015 ).
