Woodland Star welcomes new head of school

Students this week welcomed administrator Jamie Lloyd|

With a strong background in Waldorf education, a passion for educational leadership and some conversational Spanish, Jamie Lloyd was an instant top contender for the school administrator spot at Woodland Star Charter School vacated by Sheila Reilly last year. Reilly left after a decade at the school to pursue other opportunities.

Lloyd’s teaching career began 16 years ago in a small ranching town, populated by both ranch owners and migrant working families. He then completed Waldorf teacher training and taught in Waldorf charter schools for 10 years, graduating a class that he lead through all eight grades. “I believe this is an essential experience for any Waldorf school administrator,” he said.

At the Sebastopol Independent Charter School, Lloyd served as faculty chair and helped to reform the schools pedagogical administrative structure, working on the faculty council, serving as the parent-teacher liaison and later as the administrative liaison for the school. He has also held teaching positions at SunRidge Charter School in Sebastopol and Tomales Elementary School.

Most recently, Lloyd served as lower school coordinator at Summerfield Waldorf School and Farm in Santa Rosa. “I was involved in almost every aspect of school governance working collaboratively to move a variety of initiatives forward in order to meet the need of students and families, as well as improving the daily operation of the school,” he explained.

Lloyd lives in Petaluma and has two grown children in their early 20s. His sister, Katie Rice, is a Marin County Supervisor.

Lloyd received his undergraduate degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and his teaching credentials from Dominican University. He obtained his Waldorf teacher training certificate from the Center for Educational Renewal in Santa Rosa.

Tom Kimball, a WSC Charter Council representative, said, “Jamie comes to us as a former teacher, experienced administrator, as well as a kind and outgoing promoter of Waldorf-based educational and developmental principles which are all important traits for a well-rounded Woodland Star administrator.”

Reilly added, “Jamie is terrific and highly competent which makes my leaving easier knowing the school I love so dearly is in such capable hands.”

Lloyd started in the role at Woodland Star on July 1 and said he can’t wait for the kids to arrive today for the first day of school.
