A Napa County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man during an exchange of gunfire late Sunday night, according to the Napa County Sheriff’s Office.

The 11 p.m. shooting happened on Henry Road, west of Napa.

Officials said the first shot came from a man, who fired at the deputy from inside his car. The deputy fired back, hitting the man. He died at the scene, officials said.

The deputy, identified only as a female, wasn’t hurt. She now is on administrative leave amid an investigation. The name of the man wasn’t released as his family hadn’t been notified.

A body camera worn by the deputy captured the entire incident and was being viewed by Napa County’s major crimes task force. The task force includes deputies, Napa police and the Napa County District Attorney’s Office.

Further details weren’t released and sheriff’s officials, and no further information was expected to be released before Wednesday.
