Creamy waves hit the Sonoma Coast

You have to see these waves to believe it. Video credit: Don Thorson|

Mother Nature frequently puts on a show after stormy weather. Amateur photographer Don Thorson was walking on the beach along the Sonoma Coast near Gualala on Thursday, Jan. 17 when he took this video of “creamy waves.”

The recent storm system that moved through the North Bay had created what is more commonly known as sea foam. The foam is created by the agitation of seawater, particularly when it contains higher concentrations of dissolved organic matter from the offshore breakdown of algal blooms.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration website, most sea foam is not harmful to humans and is often an indication of a productive ocean ecosystem.
