City of Sonoma names Karen Collins ‘alcalde’ for 2019

Hint: She's an environmental dynamo|

Sonoma, meet your new honorary mayor: Karen Collins.

Collins was named Jan. 14 as Sonoma’s next “alcalde,” or honorary mayor – an annual recognition bestowed by the City of Sonoma toward a Sonoma resident whose work and dedication to the community has been “above and beyond.”

Mayor Amy Harrington nominated Collins in recognition of her ongoing efforts and contributions to the Sonoma community and Collins nomination was ratified unanimously by the City Council.

What most impressed Harrington and the rest of the council is Collins’ work in the preservation and protection of the environment. Collins currently serves as a commissioner on the Sonoma County Regional Parks and Recreation Commission and was instrumental in creating Sonoma’s Overlook Trail. She also serves on the Board of Jack London Park Partners, the nonprofit group that operates Jack London State Historical Park. In 2014, Collins was named the Sonoma Valley “Conservationist of the Year.”

The City of Sonoma will host a soon-to-be-announced reception in Collins’ honor. For information, call 933-2216.
